A couple is preparing to welcome their 15th child after giving birth to quintuplets, triplets and twins. And they feel that the life of a big family is chaotic, but they are gradually getting used to it to the surprise and admiration of millions of people.
Karen, 40, and her husband, Deon Derrico, 49, from Las Vegas, welcomed four children in quick succession, the two oldest being 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren, Dar rian, 16, and Derrick, 11. Karen then gave birth to twins Diez and Dior, 3, usually referred to as “the triplets” after tragically losing one child. Their triplet brother, Carter, ᴘᴀssᴇᴅ ᴀᴡᴀʏ, was born a few hours after the launch of 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡.

While all Derrico 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren haʋe names begin with the letter “D”, Carter is an exception as his parents wanted to give him a short, unique name. Karen and Deon welcomed triplets Dawsyn, De’Aren and Dyʋer to their family in 2019, bringing the total to 14.
“They’re all naturals,” said Karen. “We don’t have many people on either side of our family. But we have the most groups that no one has ever heard of. After our oldest, I have two ᴍɪsᴄᴀʀʀɪᴀɢᴇ. When I got pregnant, my doctor put me on medication to maintain my pregnancy. But all our 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren were naturally convinced. Not a single round of I.V.F.”

Parents Karen and Deon Derrico work hard to get their 14 children ready for the day, but it’s not easy. “At the Derrico house, it was like morning notice,” she says. “Everything is a mess. ‘Sit down, have breakfast and do things together,’ we always remind them. When they fail, it’s clearly work. Sometimes dressing and feeding everyone can feel like an expensive Olympic sport. Oh my, the money we spend on food. Monthly income ranges from $2,500 to $3,500. In a week, we consume 15 boxes of waffles and 20 rolls of toilet paper.”

But Karen is not at all overwhelmed. She adds: “This is us, this is our life. Not only did we choose to raise a large family, we also chose to make sure we could provide for them.”
