The 31-year-old who gave birth to 7 children after just 2 pregnancies is surprising everyone.
“It will be hard to impress Digna Carpio on Mother’s Day – Queens mom already has six jewels” means that Digna Carpio already has six children, so it will be hard to impress her on Mother’s Day.
“Digna gave birth to sextuplets in October, six healthy babies truly worth celebrating” means that Digna Carpio gave birth to six healthy babies at the same time in October.
“Just being together, spending a quiet, relaxing day with all my babies, is enough,” said Digna, 31, in Spanish. She then added with a laugh, “But ‘relaxation’ and ‘calm’ aren’t very easy to come by in this house anymore.”
Digna and her husband Victor are getting used to having a busy house with six babies. The couple also have an eight-year-old son, Jhan Carlos.
“It’s hard to go out with six babies,” says Digna. “Knowing they’re with me, happy and healthy, is the best feeling.
One recent afternoon, the babies were resting in six cribs arranged in two neat rows in the family’s living room. Genesis smiled, waiting for feeding time, while Justin, usually calm, waited patiently. When Jaden started crying, Joel, Jezreel and Danelia followed.
“Everyone develops their own personality,” explains their mother. “As far as the others are concerned, they all look alike. I already know who’s who.
Digna and Victor admit that their joy has been accompanied by sacrifice. The bills keep piling up, and big expenses like $5,000 for electricity, money for baby food and all those diapers can be hard to cover on the $900 biweekly salary that 35-year-old Victor earns as a maintenance worker.
The Carpio babies are only the second set of sextuplets born to a New York couple and are believed to be the first Hispanic sextuplets in U.S. history.
Two nurses from Visiting Nurses of New York help the parents care for the babies. But when they leave at 6 p.m., Digna and Victor know that sleep will be a luxury.
